Welcome to Babbé
Our firm is widely recognised for the depth of experience of our lawyers and has a consistent track record acting on leading and landmark cases in Guernsey. We provide our clients with whom we have formed partnerships built over a century of practice, with an integrated and seamless service. We are approachable and accessible, and have the skills, expertise and scale to handle the most demanding, complex and innovative instructions.
Our History
As one of Guernsey’s oldest independent law firms, we can trace our roots back to 1920, originating in the practice of Advocate Joseph Naftel.
Reflecting the names of the firm’s owners over the years, the business name at various points included Martel, Le Pelley, Tostevin, Le Poidevin, Allez and Babbé – although not all at the same time!
Finally, in 2006, we became Babbé and in 2016, a limited liability partnership. Since 2013 we have made our home in La Vielle Cour, the building first recorded as Guernsey’s Royal Court in the 12th century. We are situated in La Plaiderie which translates to place of pleading, and was the place at which litigants would ‘plead’ to have their cases selected so that they may then be heard inside the old, Royal Court building (‘La Vieille Cour’). Our rich history reflects the depth and knowledge of Guernsey’s legal landscape.
However, whilst firmly rooted in Guernsey, we not only provide partner-led legal services on-island but also to many off-island clients. Our integrated and seamless service ensures all our clients, wherever they may be, receive first-class legal support.
